Before the evening news
“I press I’m safe at 5:00 PM, before the news. My daughter gets a full day of grace. If I miss it, call me first. Then call Ruth next door, she has a key.”
Independence you keep
Choose a time to check in with family, a friend, or a neighbor. You keep your routine. They agree how to check on you if you miss it.
Development preview. Practice only. Do not rely on BackBy for a real safety need yet.
You decide when a quiet day becomes “check on me.”
The people you already trust decide what happens next.
Made for real routines
“I press I’m safe at 5:00 PM, before the news. My daughter gets a full day of grace. If I miss it, call me first. Then call Ruth next door, she has a key.”
“Back by 9:00 AM. I have type 1 diabetes, and nobody expects to hear from me on a Saturday. If I miss it, call me. If I don’t answer, my note says who to call next.”
“Back by 8:00 PM. My neighbor is my Backer, not just my kids. My note says where the spare key is and which pharmacy to call.”
How it works
BackBy stays quiet unless a check-in is missed. You choose the time, the grace period, and the people.
Pick a time you will press the button, like 5:00 PM. Add a grace period, from none up to 24 hours. Set it to repeat every day.
Your Backers are family or a neighbor you trust. They pair by scanning a QR code or typing 12 words. Your private note tells them who to call and where the key is.
Your phone reminds you at your time and again during the grace period. Press I’m safe and the day is done. Running late? Press Add time. Need help? Press I need help. If the grace period passes, your Backers see Needs Attention and follow your note.
Quiet by default
With a 5:00 PM check-in and a 24-hour grace period, your family sees nothing until 5:00 PM the next day. A long grace period keeps them in peace on ordinary days, but the signal is slower on a bad day. You pick the balance.
Two roles, one routine
Set your time, write a private note, and stay in charge of I’m safe and Add time.
The BackBy app on your iPhone checks for updates and may notify you. BackBy itself never calls or texts you. If a Plan needs attention, follow the note they prepared.
Privacy with boundaries
BackBy is built so the server does not need to know who you are, who your Backers are, or what your note says.
Read what BackBy can and cannot protectWhat travels through BackBy
Clear limits build trust
Honest about readiness
BackBy’s app and its safeguards are still in development. Early access is for practice and feedback only. Do not rely on it yet for a real safety need.
Common questions
No. BackBy notices a missed check-in. It cannot notice a fall. If you cannot press the button, your Backers learn something is wrong only after your grace period passes.
No. The check-in is a time, not a place. Optional map sharing is off by default and uses a third-party map provider with its own privacy warning.
BackBy’s server contacts no one. Your Backers’ apps check for updates and may notify them. The people you chose decide what to do, using your note.
The BackBy app on her iPhone. She pairs by scanning your QR code or typing 12 words. No account, no password. BackBy is iPhone only for now.
Your phone reminds you at your time and again during the grace period. If the grace period ends without I’m safe, your Backers see Needs Attention.
Check in early, press Add time to move today’s deadline, or change your Plan. Tell your Backers if your routine will change for a while.
In the finished design, the server cannot read your note, and a Backer sees it only when your Plan needs attention or you ask for help. The current build does not enforce this yet, so do not put real private details in it.
Not yet. BackBy is in development and its release checklist is not complete. Early access is for practice and feedback only.
Today’s check-in is complete and your Backers have nothing to do. In the finished design, your Emergency Only note stays sealed. If your Plan repeats daily, tomorrow’s check-in is ready at the same time.
